Living in Conwy…
The rural area accounts for some 80% of the total 1,130 sq kms of the County whilst being home to only 18.3% of its total population of 109,596. The area contains a diverse and rich environment stretching from the Snowdonia National Park in the west, which covers 50% of the rural area, across the Conwy Valley to the hills and moorland to the west of the Vale of Clwyd. A predominantly farming landscape it is punctuated by the mountains of Snowdonia and the forests of Gwydyr and Clocaenog with scattered villages and hamlets.
Whilst the County’s population as a whole is growing at a faster rate than much of the rest of Wales 2.6% compared to 1.9% across Wales for 1993-2003, the population of the rural wards is slowly declining, 0.3% in the same period. It is the older age groups which are growing. At 26.3% the retirement age group is significantly greater than the Welsh average of 20.1% with the working age group representing 55.2% compared to 59.7%.
