Broad Band Not Spots
The Conwy Rural Partnership and Conwy County Borough Council are looking into the lack of broadband availability in rural Conwy. The provision of this service would provide both an economic and social benefit to those areas.
In 2008 the European Commission announced its intention to channel an additional 1 billion Euros to address broadband availability in Rural areas. Wales’s share of this is 1.6 million Euros. The funding will be delivered through Axis 3 of the Rural Development Plan.
The Welsh Assembly Government has decided that this money will be used to enhance the Regional Innovative Broadband Support Scheme (RIBS) project; this scheme aims to provide areas of Wales with first-generation (512Kbps to 2Mbps to the customer and 256Kbps to 512Kbps away from the customer) broadband services at affordable prices comparable with urban areas of Wales.
‘Not Spots’ are classed as ‘areas within enabled exchanges that still cannot access entry level broadband’. If you are located within these ‘Not Spot’ areas you can register this on the RIBS website which will enable the team to map these areas. The RIBS project is also currently actively engaging with the telecommunications industry to determine appropriate and cost effective solutions for not-spots.
If you are located within these ‘not spots’ you can access this website http://cymru.gov.uk/topics/businessandeconomy/broadbandandict/initiatives/ribs/?lang=en&ts=3 to register the fact.
This registration will highlight the need for broadband in rural Conwy which currently has no access. Could you please forward this e-mail widely to ensure that this scheme is beneficial to Conwy.
