Conwy Orchards Initiative

What is Conwy Orchards Initiative?

The purpose of this initiative is to undertake an extensive study of indigenous fruit, soft fruit or nut bearing trees in Conwy, and to identify the commercial viability of growing these varieties.

The study aims to promote the conservation and enhancement of rural Conwy’s natural and cultural resources, and to encourage financial growth by promoting sustainability and farm diversification.

Firstly, the project will look at orchards and groups of trees which have a local distinctiveness or are relevant to the study. Significant sites will be mapped and the relevant information stored.

Secondly, the survey will identify varieties of fruit with commercial relevance or historical significance to Conwy, will engage with farmers or landowners prepared to carry out propagation trials, and will identify safe areas for use as genetic banks. The commercial viability of these varieties will be determined, and potential markets and outlets for the sale of trees, fruit or cider identified.
