Conwy timber needs analysis
What is Conwy timber needs analysis?
The purpose of this study project is to review Conwy’s wood and timber sector – from seed to saw – by looking at the current needs and future potential of local timber firms and farm-based timber businesses in rural Conwy.
By engaging with key businesses, the project aims to encourage development and boost confidence in Conwy’s timber industry, to raise the profile of the sector, and to contribute to sustainable economic activity in rural communities – while at the same time promoting environmental enhancement.
The project will evaluate Conwy’s timber trade and look at ways to gather and market local provenance species. It will explore the need for native tree nurseries, satellite nurseries, a timber store and a seed bank, and will look at establishing a visitor centre with workshops for use by local craftspeople.
The project aims to encourage innovation and enterprise, and to create additional employment. Training opportunities and ways of imparting knowledge will be discussed, including traditional skills and silvicultural techniques, timber conversion and processing methods. The project will encourage the sustainable use of resources and raise awareness of issues relating to things like health and safety. Expert technical advice and business support will be offered, and the possibility of open days and study tours to explore innovative technologies will be discussed.
Consultants will be appointed to undertake the study and project development, which will be conducted with close liaison with the stakeholders: Conwy County Borough Council, Coed Cymru, Snowdonia National Park, Forestry Commission – as well as woodland owners, woodland contractors, timber processors and manufacturers, woodcraft and furniture manufacturers.
